Incredible Skies - Activating Drone Tech Development in NZ / Aotearoa

Thursday 2:30pm - 3:00pm, ITP Conference (ITP 1 Room)

Globally, UAV (drone) technologies are developing at a rapid pace. Yet, autonomous BVLOS (beyond visual line of sight) use cases are hindered by regulations worldwide, that slow down advancements largely due to security concerns. Terrorism.

New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority regulations are considered progressive. The CAA has created a regulatory pathway for research and development and delegated the authority to manage airspace to Maori-owned company Incredible Skies.

The 874 square kilometres of airspace in Northland's Hokianga region features ocean, dunes, forest, farmland and challenging terrain for rigorous testing. It has attracted international media and UAV sector attention. The airspace is specifically for testing drone technologies to enable BVLOS flights in an operationally safe and enabling manner, with interest from international drone companies, global drone racing organisers, crisis and disaster support, and tracking, sensor, and connectivity solution companies.

What is the real potential for New Zealand's technology sector and how will it inform national technology strategies?

What does it mean for the rural and largely Māori communities underneath the airspace, and how will it contribute to economic development in measurable ways.
