Strategies to Support Interest in a CS/IT Career Among Middle School Students

Thursday 2:30pm - 3:00pm, ITP Conference (Room 1 (Designertech))

In most developed countries, the IT sector is unable to attract a sufficient workforce. There are also gender, cultural and socioeconomic inequalities in the workforce. It is uncertain, however, if the educational strategies and initiatives that have been launched lead to a positive change in the sector intake.

This presentation is about a Ph.D. research project that focuses on IT career interest development among middle school students, with the rationale that important aspects of career choice behavior are established in this age group.

As a theoretical research foundation, career choice development theory is used to identify influences that could support IT career interest development.

The practical research component is the development of a technology enhanced learning session about IT-professions, in a research community consisting of middle school students and adults working in the IT-sector. The presentation from the development phase is subsequently presented to research participants, and IT career interest development is measured.
